Vanity is defined as a preoccupation with other people’s opinion. In everyday life, vanity is used without thinking. Many people may be extremely caution of others judging them. Most people’s behavior is motivated by vanity. Abigail Williams in The Crucible is a good example of vanity. Throughout the book, The Crucible, Abigail told lies about certain women in Salem. Thinking that she was doing God’s work, she informed Reverend Hale all the people who has committed witchcraft. The purpose of telling these lies are for her to get out of trouble. After dancing in the forest and drinking blood, she didn’t want to reveal that she committed a sin but blamed it to another person. Because he is Deputy Governor, he is shown respect throughout the whole book. In order to keep his position high, he has to go in favor of the people. For example, in the book, The Crucible, he knew he was wrong with the trials, but he still ordered to hang the people. The reason he did this was because he didn’t want the people to know that he was fooled by teenagers. Addition to the false trials, Danforth knew that the Salem Witch Trials were false, but he refused to repeal the cases. At the end of the book, Danforth wanted everyone accused of witchcraft to confess; however, no one dared. When Proctor decided to profess his sin, Danforth was overly happy because he didn’t want them to be hung. In order to keep his name clean, Deputy Governor Danforth used vanity.
Nowadays, many people lie in order to not hurt people’s feelings and to get attention. For example, when a person asks you how they look today, you would unconsciously answer good, even if they don’t look that great. In order to not hurt that person’s feelings, you lie. Most of the time, many people lie to get attention. It sometimes very hard to get people’s attention. The easy way out is to lie about something or
