Edward William Elgar was born in Broadheath, England on June 02, 1857; he died on February 23, 1934. His father repaired pianos so he had many opportunities to play. He learned advanced violin under Adolf Pollitzer for one year in 1877. Nonetheless, since that time, he has not received any more training. He did not have the funds he needed after this and soon joined a band called ‘Worchester and County Lunatic Asylum’ as a conductor in 1879.Elgar trained band members while he juggled writing and making concerts. He married Caroline Roberts in May of 1889 and had a daughter with her. On June19, 1899 he played his famous Enigma Variations for the first time at St. James’s Hall in London. The two first short notes followed by two long notes grabs one attention then the notes are immediately reversed this gives the idea of a continuous note that is light and airy and set to waling tempo. The first variation is dedicated to his wife Caroline who has a very romantic theme with the theme of G minor that had flutes included; one can easily hear how he adores her because it is slow but speeds up towards the last thirty seconds to transition into the second variation. The second variation is opened up with a violin and is dedicated to Hew Steuart- Powell whom he played chamber music with. This movement have a fast upbeat happy almost theme which flows into variation three which have a upbeat theme as well but have a slightly humorous theme that goes up and down in volume throughout the entire variation. This variation begins and ends in the same feel and it is dedicated to Richard Townshend who rode his bicycle with his bell constantly ringing. Furthermore, variation four starts off very intense, but mellows out in the middle and returns to home in the end. As a result, this paints the picture of William Baker being a county squire gentleman. Variation five is dedicated to Richard Arnold, who loved music and played it as though he was self-taught. Variation six did not have the Enigma four note themes but it is a simple slightly romantic that depicts a beginner learning, this is dedicated to Isabel Fitton who was just learning to play the violin. Variation seven is very fast, yet this is where the theme returns at the end. The beginning is slightly augmented, yet friendly, and this easily depicts the character of Troyte Griffith who was an architect and of Edward’s best friends. Variation eight is dedicated to Winfred Norbury who lives in a country house, this variation have a country theme that starts low then slightly increase to depict a peaceful location. Variation nine is the most melancholic of these variations which begins gradually with a moving romantic variant from the original theme that shows how close they was and how Nimrod was a good person. This variation is dedicated to Nimrod the hunter, who was one of Elgar’s dearest friends and parts of this variation is found in one and seven.
