Managing the Organization A lot of planning occurs within the Varsity Reds organization. Every year the organization must reassess teams and set new expectations for their seasons as well as for the organization itself. Teams change every year due to multiple factors such as the coaching staff, athletes graduating, and resource availability to name a few. Planning within this organization is constantly happening due to the fact the organization is an open system in a dynamic environment and the Varsity Reds must constantly adapt to changes. Using the eight steps of the decision-making process it is possible to understand how the Varsity Reds developed a planned document to present to the U Sports organization as a bid to host these national tournaments. First, the Varsity Reds specified their goal of hosting a national championship. Next, the organization identified opportunities in the external environment such as sponsors who were willing to donate resources as well as the opportunity to grow the fan base of the organization itself. Once the opportunities are identified, the organization looks at its constraints (a SWOT analysis is helpful to use during these two steps). A few constraints the organization may have come across while in the planning include parking availability, volunteer contribution, and facility availability. Next, the organization would look for ways to overcome constraints and to generate alternate courses of action such as finding another facility to use temporarily. Once alternatives have been generated to overcome a problem the organization selects the best course of action. Buildings such as the Richard J, Currie Centre provide a place for programs within the Varsity Reds organization to train, practice, and compete against other teams. The Currie Centre is not only open to all students at UNB but members from every program within the Varsity Reds organization such as hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and many more are able to train there. The Currie Centre and the Aitken University Centre also provide office space for staff working within the Varsity Reds organization (University of New Brunswick, n.d). Other facilities that are used by the Varsity Reds organization include the BMO Centre, Sir Max Aitken Pool, Canada Games Stadium, G. Forbes Elliot Athletic Centre, and the previously mentioned Aitken University Centre. High quality facilities play an important part in athlete recruitment because one of the big draws of committing to a Canadian University is the quality of resources the university can provide the student athlete and the quality of the facilities the athlete will be playing and practicing in is very important to them.
