Our group chose the Vegan/Whole wheat dietary restriction. With the increasing amounts of people becoming vegans, it has become important to chefs and nutritionists to accommodate for those who choose this diet. According to the article The Rise of Veganism: Start a Revolution, 16 million people in America consume a vegan diet. It is important for people to become knowledgeable about this restriction because it’s not only a diet, it’s a lifestyle for these people. There are three reasons most people go vegan; for animal rights, for their health, and/or for the environment. Any type of diet will cause restrictions, but veganism seems to be one of the most restricted diet. This diet in particular, makes it harder to get enough protein at times, and he or she consumes little to no vitamin B12 and/or D, therefore having to take a supplements. Although there are downfalls to this diet, there are many benefits that overcome the negatives. By choosing this diet he or she chooses to not take part in exploiting animals for human benefits. When eating vegan, it is likely that the diet will be more nutrient rich due to he or she eating more vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts. As someone who is a vegan it is important to incorporate whole grains (Whole Grains: An Important Source of Essential Nutrients). As stated previously whole wheat has more protein than white flour, but there is more to whole wheat than just protein. The pure fact is that whole wheat is not stripped of its nutrients. Some of those products are red dyes, white granulated sugar, alcohol, peanut, orange juice and jello. Red dyes sometimes contain bugs that help produce a red color. White granulated is also filtered with animal products, but it specifically uses bone char for the filtering process. Organic cane sugar that's labeled vegan is a good substitution for white granulated sugars and so is succanot. Some brands use gelatin to bind seasoning onto peanuts, so that would be nowhere to vegan. Make sure to just look at the ingredients before using it in a vegan recipe. Surprisingly, orange juices that are fortified with omega-3 is not vegan because of where they get the omega-3 from. The omega-3 is derived from fish, which is not vegan.
