1. Is the vengeance gained in "The Cask of Amontillado" necessary or extreme? Defend your answer with the text. Yes indeed, the vengeance gained in “The Cask of Amontillado”. However, the story doesn't clearly explain the insult that Montresors refers to. Since, the story was written in the an unknown time that must have been in the classical past, insulting someone must be considered a huge outrageous criminal act on a personal level. It is not clear whether insulting had the same meaning in the days the story took place, as it would be today. “But when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge”. Montresors talked about taking revenge and he kept to his promise. “I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up. Against the new masonry I 're-erected the old rampart of bones”. Whatever the insult might have been it was an extreme act on the behalf of Montresors to take a life. 2. Even though, the story mentioned a condition of nervous breakdown it seems more a case of a depressed woman who has lost her desire to live or Socialization. Her husband John claims to be a physician specializing in cases such as his wife yet. The narrator of the story feels if John doesn't feel her pain. On occasions John laughing at Charlotte telling her that it is just her imagination.
