According to “19 Most Ironic Facts of all Time,” by Buzzfeed, in 1985, a man in New Orleans drowned at a party thrown by lifeguards. The party was thrown to celebrate a year at the pool with no drowning’s. As many know, life has many events that include irony. Irony could include families, vacation, or just strange things that happen throughout a family.

Verbal irony occurs when what is said is different from what is meant. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” an example of verbal irony is the final line of the story when Montresor, the protagonist, has just killed Fortunato by walling him up in a tomb in the catacombs beneath Montresor’s palazzo. Montresor says, “In pace requiescat!” (214) which in English translates to “May he rest in peace!” This is verbal irony because, as Montresor has just murdered Fortunato, the reader can infer that Montresor does not wish Fortunato to rest in peace, though that is what he said.
Throughout life, influences like family, media, and friends could shape a person for the future. Most people even look up to certain figures throughout one's life such as parents and grandparents. These role models can cause one to alter their choices and lifestyles as one's life grows and develops. In the short story “The Catbird Seat,” the author James Thurber develops verbal, dramatic, and situational irony by his plot structure. In the beginning of the story Mrs. Barrows says phrases like “Are you tearing up the pea patch?” Right after that an employee explains to Mr. Martin what is means. He says, “‘Tearing up the pea patch’ meant going on a rampage.” That section of the story is verbal irony because Mrs. Burrows is saying phrases she doesn't really mean.
The hunter and the prey is an interesting dynamic, because one moment you can be the predator and think that you are on top of the world, and in the next moment you are the prey. Irony in the most dangerous game is a strong factor in the story, because at one moment you have the power, but then it is taken away and you are hunted like an animal. When Rainsford signed up for the hunting trip, he was not expecting that he himself was the one that was going to be hunted. In the beginning of the story, the sailors on the hunting expedition fear an island because of rumors, even though they are strong and are not afraid to kill any animal. Richard Cornell’s use of Irony in the story is used effectively because it shows that someone who was strong and fearless earlier is now helpless and fearful being the prey and that everyone thinks they are civilized and have good morals.

The idea of having everlasting love is an interesting and scary topic but this potion is something that is even scarier and could ruin one’s life completely. Irony in the short story, The Chaser, can show how love can be destroyed by someone else’s actions.
In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, a family takes a road trip down to Florida that ends in the characters inevitable demise. A question that seems to constantly arise in the story is what the definition of good is. The Grandma’s superficial and shallow meaning for good results in the family’s misfortune. In this story, Flannery O’Connor uses the third person point of view to tell the family’s journey from beginning to end.
Verbal irony can be described simply as sarcasm can be found throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. “It was a happy cemetery” (135.) Scout describes the cemetery she was in and its surroundings. This cemetery was far from a happy place.
Irony may appear in difference ways within literature. Irony changes our expectations of what might happen. It can create the unexpected twist at the end of a story or anecdote that gets people laughing or crying. Verbal irony is intended to be a humorous type of irony. Within the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, irony is used in order to establish themes of blindness, invisibility, and race. Irony is a literary device with which the author conveys an alternate meaning to the words than is actually said. There are different types of irony that are used in writing, although Ellison primarily uses two kinds: verbal irony and dramatic irony. Verbal irony is when words are used to convey something different than what is being said and dramatic irony describes a situation in which the audience has knowledge that the characters do not.
