Movie Paper: The Soloist
The movie, The Soloist, is based on a true story of a homeless musical prodigy that once went to Julliard and has schizophrenia named Nathaniel Ayers. In the movie Nathaniel is played by Jamie Foxx. Nathaniel is discovered by an LA Times columnist named Steve Lopez, who is played by Robert Downey. Steve is looking for a new story for his column in the LA Times when he bumps into Nathaniel on his lunch break downtown Los Angeles. One example of verbal therapeutic communication is offering oneself to the patient (Sharma & Gupta, 2023). During the movie Steve tries to offer himself to Nathaniel by trying to help Nathaniel get better by getting him therapy, medication, and an apartment even though that's not what Nathaniel wanted. By the end of the movie Steve realizes that all Nathaniel needs is a friend. Steve offers himself by being Nathaniel's friend by stating “Mr. Ayers, I'm honored to be your friend” (Wright, 2009). Offering oneself to a patient that is diagnosed with schizophrenia allows the patient to build trust. Another example of verbal therapeutic communication is reflecting on a situation that occurred (Sharma & Gupta , 2023). Steve does this with Nathaniel after Nathaniel had yelled and hit Steve when he was given paperwork that stated he was schizophrenic and needed to get help. Nathaniel said some hurtful things to Steve and apologized for it. Steve explains that friends get in fights sometimes and that he accepts his apology and they are still friends. Reflecting on this situation that occurred, Nathaniel continues to build his trust with Steve. The last example of verbal therapeutic communication is using open ended questions (Sharma & Gupta , 2023). Open ended questions are questions that allow the patient to answer with more than just a yes or no answer. These types of questions encourage …show more content…
