Divergent is the first book of a trilogy written by Veronica Roth, an American writer. This book is set in the future, in post-war Chicago, where all people, after reaching 16 years old, must join one of the five devised groups in order to find their life role/character for the rest of their lives. The five stratums are named after certain traits/personalities. Abnegation - people who are able to act selflessly and sacrifice their needs to help others, Amity – people who are devoted to ideas of peace, kindness and neutrality, Candor – people who are always honest as they believe it was total lies and deception that led the world to war, Dauntless – people who have strength, courage and constantly seek ways of overcoming fears, and lastly Erudite …show more content…

They also happen to be rivals with Abnegation. The main characters involved are, Tris, her parents – Natalie and Andrew, her brother – Caleb, her coach/future partner – Four, her friends – Christina and Peter and then the main evil enemies – Eric and Jeanine. This novel is about Tris, a 16-year-old girl who is about to choose which group she wants to join. Tris has been born and raised as a member of Abnegation but she feels as though she doesn’t quite fit in. Before the choosing day, Tris finds out she is divergent. A divergent is someone who has the ability to be in more than one faction. She is told to keep this a secret; otherwise her life could be in danger, as faction leaders usually kill divergents. This idea relates to today because to get somewhere in life and to complete something you want to, you have to be determined and resilient. In the novel, Tris goes through a lot and gets knocked down many times, but no matter what she went through she didn’t give up. An example of this was during the knife throwing training when her friend Al wasn’t hitting any of the targets. Eric got mad and told him to stand in front of the target while Four throws knifes at him, and if he flinched he would become factionless. At this point Tris opened her mouth and said to Eric, “Stop!
