I’m Melanie Lint from Johnstown, Pennsylvania and I’m writing to you because I am interested in playing softball at Virginia Tech. Not only am I interested in your excellent softball team, I am also interested in your advanced Pre-Veterinary program. While viewing your college page and softball stats, I’ve noticed that one of your pitchers will have graduated by my graduating year, and the other will be a senior. You built the program up so much since you got hired in 1995 and I would love to be part of it.

Like most careers; however, you will need to graduate college and complete your test for your license. To start, you will need to find a college or university near you that offers an associates program in Veterinary Technology, complete the steps of enrollment, and begin your classes. Typical programs last as long as two years including your externship. You will be taking classes such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, small and large animal husbandry, animal life science, veterinary medical terminology, etc. You will also be taking the basic college courses offered such as college math, ethics, oral and written communication, and more.
Diversity in individuals is integral in an educational setting in ways that are not always directly visible or perceivable to others around them. These individuals bring experiences, outlooks, talents, and skills that allow for a more enriched and dynamic learning environment and I believe that I can contribute greatly with my own experiences to this shared learning environment. Growing up I was always around animals and because of this my love for animals was fostered on from an early age. Both of my parents are veterinarians, and like many children, my source of inspiration, but because of this it can be difficult to say how much of their influence attributes to my decision to pursue a career in the field of veterinary medicine. I’m currently a student at San Joaquin Valley College, working towards becoming a certified medical assistant in which I have proficiency in typing skills and accomplished CPR and HIPAA certification. My passion is the medical field where I can assist the needs and services of others while being able to connect and create a comfortable environment for patients. On an interpersonal level, I excel as a conversationalist to personalize each interaction I encounter. In third grade, I was assigned to create a project illustrating what I wanted to be when I grew up. At this time, due to my positive experiences with doctors and my desire to help others, especially children, I decided to describe the role of a pediatrician as my future career. Throughout my childhood, whenever asked about my future aspirations, I confidently declared that I would attend medical school and become a pediatrician. However, as I developed, the answer to this question slowly began to evolve as I gained a deeper understanding of my values and the people I desired to serve through medicine.

I am not just interested in becoming a Physician Assistant; I dream of, and am driven to become one. I have been fascinated by the medical field as long as I can remember. I had the opportunity to begin scribing for a physician and absolutely loved the patient interaction, the variety of duties that had to be accomplished and the fact that for some people a fifteen to twenty minute appointment may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of a day or life, but to those who were being seen, their lives are instantly changed for the better. I learned such a vast amount of knowledge every single day I worked there. I grew to love the medical field more and more and am confident I was meant to work my hardest to be able to provide care to patients as my life occupation; specifically rural areas like the one I grew up in.
Becoming a Professional Veterinarian Technician In today’s society higher education is not an option, but rather a necessity. Therefore becoming a professional veterinarian technician is very important to me because I love working with animals and want to help them stay well.
When I was younger, I was always hesitant to say that I wanted to go into the veterinary field because I thought that meant I only had the option to become a veterinarian, but that isn’t the case anymore. Now that I know that veterinary medicine has a broad career field, and after researching important career information (work environment, skills required, the level of education needed, salary, and job outlook), I think that being a veterinary technician/technologist is the right career choice for me. Education and certain skills are rather important when training to work as a veterinary technician/technologist. The classes that someone would need to take for this career in high school are usually biology and other sciences, and math, while the college education needed for this job is different, depending on the job title desired. If you asked me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” at the age of 5, I’d tell you I wanted to be a vet. At the age of 10, I would have replied “a doctor”. At 15, I would've said nurse. Now, at 18 years old, I have the dream of becoming a physician assistant.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
I made the decision to become a pharmacist while I was in middle school. I believe that Pharmacists play a key role in helping patients feel better and get well as quickly as possible. Pharmacists play key leadership roles in all aspects of the healthcare system. Pharmacists can work in a myriad of professional settings I love chemistry especially organic chemistry. I heard that organic chemistry is very hard.
1. What experiences have influenced your interest in STEM and your intended major? Growing up with a mother in healthcare, my sisters and I were always fascinated by the medical world. We spent hours watching Untold Stories of the ER and Grey’s Anatomy.
When asked what they want to be when they grow up, most children say astronaut, doctor, president, or veterinarian. I was one of those kids that replied “a veterinarian” when asked by others. Usually, when one gets older, that career goal changes into something different, but not for me. I did not know it then, but my dream of being a veterinarian would stick with me throughout my life, and influence the choices I make in order to reach that long-term goal. I come from a family that expresses an interminable love for animals.
