The experiences that the female prisoners endured in the Japanese labor camp is very comparable to the ones Victor Frankl experienced while in the Nazi concentration camps. Both parties were subjected to unspeakable cruelties while in lock up. They were both beaten severely, both were fed so little that they nearly starved, they both had to face the fact that they might not have seen their families again, and had to endure the mistrust and bitterness between their own prisoners. Both of their experiences were brutal however, it was through these hard experiences that both groups were pushed to find the answers to some of life's ultimate questions. For the women they were confronted with the questions of pain, hope, and character. Because of the quantity of women present in the labor camps there are several unique answers to these questions. For examples, let's look at the responses to pain. Characters like Glenn Close’s Adrienne Pargiter and Julianna Margulies Topsy Merritt. The two converse about the idea of experiencing or even embracing death. Morrie explains to Mitch that he is in a process of “spiritual development” and in this reveals his answer to the ultimate questions of death. He remarks to Mitch that he isn’t afraid of death and after having accepted he realized how important the little things in life are and how he may have spent too much time previously worrying about things that didn’t really matter. More also confronts the question of hope when presented with massive adversity. Due to the ALS Morrie is starting to lose control of some of his bodily functions, this causes him to start to pity himself and eventually moves him to tears. He gets over it quickly through and remarks to Mitch how lucky he is to be able to say goodbye to his loved
