I strongly agree with Taryn’s statement that Victor has no emotional connections with the people around him. Victor has an objective view of everyone he meets. They all serve their purpose and when he no longer needs them, he leaves. For example, Victor regards Elizabeth as his own possession: “All praises bestowed upon [Elizabeth] I received as made to a possession of my own”(37). Victor has no emotional connection with Elizabeth, and therefore, he can not see her unique qualities as equal to his own. She is different from Victor and has different priorities. I think that Andy’s ideas were the most insightful and interesting because he made several comments pertaining to the topic that gave a new perspective on Victor’s character. Andy supported his conjecture that Victor’s impulse to continue his studies of natural philosophy was due to stubbornness. After showing his father the book he had been studying, Victor’s father dismisses the book as literary garbage: “My dear VIctor, do not waste your time upon this; it is sad trash”(40). It becomes Victor’s impulse to always try to prove his actions as correct. This is part of the reason why Victor does not stop to think of the consequences of his actions while creating his monster. One of these consequences, which Andy pointed out, was the fact that once the monster came to life, it became uncontrollable. Victor becomes frightened because until that moment, he had been in control of his life and the people around him. However, this monster has no clue of social customs or the ways of life. The monster is like a child that has to be taught and raised with affection, which Victor is incapable of doing. One other way that Andy stimulated discussion was by asking intriguing questions. One of these questions includes whether impulses are based on emotion or reason. I believe that impulses are based on emotion because the purpose of impulses are to give action to one’s feelings. If one feels strongly about something, they will do whatever they can to protect or destroy that
