Vidal’s article “Drugs: Case for Legalizing Marijuana” tells about his quick solution to drug addiction in the United States. The solution is to make drugs available and sell them on the open market at cost with full disclosure about what good or bad effect it may have on the person taking them. Drugs are big business and can be quite profitable in the United States; from the suppliers in Mexico, to the Bureau of Narcotics regulating to the Mafia selling drugs. It appears that everyone has a piece of the pie. By making drugs available, the aforementioned would be out of business and Vidal refers to them ‘not leaving without a struggle’. Vidal is pro-drug in his article with a heavy burden placed on the citizen to become educated and informed …show more content…
It is based on a personal perspective and there is little to no research or statistics, only his viewpoint. Vidal does not write this article from the perspective of an addict. He does not address the issue or physiology behind addiction and why people become addicted. I feel that there’s not much sympathy in this article for those who do use drugs and become hooked. The author experimented with drugs and did not become addicted; his brain may be wired differently. By stating that people should be told in a sensible way that certain drugs are bad, may be a little too late especially for a drug addict and I’m not sure in what way is considered sensible. I feel that the author is assuming that people will seek help or treatment. Vidal is targeting a more liberal progressive open minded audience. I don’t feel that the more traditional and conservative citizens would entertain this rationale and viewpoint. Vidal articulates his argument in a concise manner. He includes a variety of elements- human, history, ethics and government. The current human element and drug use is a hot topic and could be debated for a long time. The message that I take away from the article is to become better educated to the current drug laws and why our lawmakers are still prohibiting them or what the rationale is when some states legalize …show more content…
The government should be held responsible for the deaths because had it not been for the kids taking heroin instead of marijuana they’d still be alive. Also, I see that Vidal is using post hoc fallacy which states that because the government blocked the shipment of marijuana it was a direct cause for the children overdosing on heroin because there were no other drugs. One event preceded another. Vidal’s strengths in the article would be coming from a place of action. I feel that he sees the justification for legalizing drugs as a right we should have and due to a lack of education and suppression, as citizens we do not exercise or pursue this. The suggestion to have a description on the drugs is great. It will make drug users aware of what they’re taking although it’s not regulated or
