In the academic language, it is vital for students to know that there is a huge difference between the two disciplinary areas: Humanities and Social Sciences. Each one is constructed to reflect the needs of a particular audience. Students can display a specific writing format which would help the audience distinguish the context of the writing. I will be analyzing five articles, in order to portray the difference between the disciplinary areas and their distinct structures, language and reference style. First of all, the title is creative and unique, it is a question. It is structured like a normal essay, it has paragraphs and transitions. The tone throughout the writing is displaying passion yet argumentative and opinionative. He writes, “in a way, we are pointing fingers at the wrong people. When we worry that a violent fame is going to turn out kids into killers, aren’t we the ones who can’t tell fantasy from reality?” (Toppo). The article, “Charging Neutral Cues with Aggressive Meaning through Violent Video Game Play” by Robert Bushing and Barbara Krahe, displays the disciplinary convention known as social sciences. It is easier to distinguish humanities from social sciences. For starters, did you realize the difference in titles? This articles title is drier and straight to the point. Just by reading the tittle it tells the audience what the article/research would be about. This article is written in the APA format, it has an abstract, a reference page and the tone of writing is more scientific, technical and unbiased. The article uses the I.M.R.A.D structure; it has an introduction, methods and results. The evidence they use is a research using the quantitative method. On certain parts they use tables and charts to get their point across and to point out the tables/information. These are all the elements that point to the Social Science
