Vietnam War Lasting twenty years, causing more than 2 million deaths, due to a struggle over a country. The Vietnam war was a battle fought from 1955 to 1975, a long and difficult time for Vietnam and the countries who helped. Once Vietnam was divided up, and because of their ways of government, problems started to arise and eventually spread to other countries who also had issues with the communists.
The war was fought between Vietnam, which had been divided in July of 1954 at the Geneva conference, and outside countries taking sides, the main conflict in the war was between North and South Vietnam. South Vietnam was backed by the United States and North Vietnam was aligned with the National Liberation Front, who was efficiently backed by the Soviet Union and mainland China. In 1954, Vietnam was split into two parts, North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted to resort to communism and South Vietnam did not agree, so they fought to keep this from happening. The United States quickly jumped in to help South Vietnam because they did not agree with the North’s governing. Then the Soviet Union and China followed in with North Vietnam, supporting communism.
Throughout the Vietnam war, there were many tactics used and important strategies that went along with them. Some important events include the Gulf of Tonkin, in 1964, when DRV torpedo boats attacked two United States destroyers, this led the United States to drop two million tons of bombs over surrounding areas. The Tet Offensive was another major turning point in the war. January 31, 1968, seven thousand DRV forces coordinated an attack on over 100 cities in South Vietnam. However, the United States and South Vietnam struck back quickly on the
