Even though the Hmong had harsh time obtaining the American culture they never told people how they felt legitimately and absolutely no one cared for them and how they literally felt. The Hmong needed jobs to survive, back in their country they used animals as trade and buying, their revenue was for uppermost profit and buying items from animals, cars to houses. The Hmong came to America knowing nothing about the culture and currency and were given money from the U.S. They were basically given money and ditched by the government. The Hmong was left to learn how to survive on their own and make their own money. Soon they began to understand the conditions of work in the U.S.A, the Hmong began to amelioration and start a life.
The Vietnam War drastically changed how Americans viewed their country. The US emerged from World War II as a world superpower and as a country where patriotism meant serving one’s country and following authority’s orders. However, in the 1960s, the discontent of many minority groups who believed that the “American Dream” was only obtainable by a select few, led to many social changes in the US. This discontent also fueled the many individuals who questioned what the US was doing fighting communism on the other side of the world. The Vietnam War divided American society at home on their views on national pride, police protection and justice, and trust in the US government, and also changed Americans view of their countries nobility.

Hmong Culture The Hmong primarily originated from the “mountainous areas of China, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos” (Purnell, 2014, pg. 236) and immigrated to the United States in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Primarily refugees from Laos, the Hmong people began immigrating to the United States in large numbers “after communist forces came to power in their native country.” (Bankston, 2014, pg. 332) Mainly settling in California, the Hmong began to be dispersed by American refugee settlement agencies across the country in the 1980s, also settling in Wisconsin and Michigan.
The Vietnam War saw the highest proportion of blacks ever to serve in an American war. During the height of the U.S. involvement, 1965-69, blacks, who formed 11 percent of the American population, made up 12.6 percent of the soldiers in Vietnam. The majority of these were in the infantry, and although authorities differ on the figures, the percentage of black combat fatalities in that period was a staggering 14.9 percent, a proportion that subsequently declined. Volunteers and draftees included many frustrated blacks whose impatience with the war and the delays in racial progress in America led to race riots on a number of ships and military bases, beginning in 1968, and the services' response in creating interracial councils and racial sensitivity
Being the second generation of a Hmong American caused complexities. Home consisted of strict traditional Hmong rules. Outside of home was an expression of freedom of the American life. Both have its own diversity. Balancing both felt as though sacrifices should be made.

The community has a large population of Vietnamese restaurants, stores and markets. Culture is an aspect of life that identifies who we are and defines us as well. Culture has taken various aspects in one’s life and combined them together. It uses tradition, beliefs, morals, laws, religion and etc.
A culture is the beliefs of a life of a group of people, and the interactions they have with the world. Culture has been passed down from many generations and is still continuing today. Everyone has characteristics that show their background and certain culture. Culture is very important and should be taught as a valuable source in life. The importance of where you come from and the history of your ancestors is precious.
My parents always pester me and say, "We are not American, we are Vietnamese". This has always been a strange concept to me since I consider myself American and Vietnamese. Two cultures I am a part of are the Vietnamese and American Cultures. I am constantly reminded of my Vietnamese side by my parents, friends and peers. Vietnamese and American culture, both emphasis work ethic, patriotism and beauty standards.
The culture of a country is defined by its own beliefs, its ways of life, its arts and other factors. Cultural differences are important because it distinguishes people living in a certain country from other countries. The differences between American and Vietnamese culture are striking, and they deserve rigorous examination. For example, marriage has the same meaning in both countries, which is the bonding of a man and a woman, but the wedding ceremonies are very unique.
Self-awareness is an initial step to understand the variations of cultures. It could help an individual to realize the essentials of his or her own culture that are usually neglected in daily life. In this essay, I would like to explore the Vietnamese culture under my own reflection and express my opinions about cultural variation discussion in international environments. At first, there is a variety of important factors that influenced Vietnamese culture but family is the most important point. In fact, a typical Viet family includes grandparents, parents and children living together under a same roof.
What is Diversity? Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.
