It is hardly debatable that there is a link between a person’s environments while growing up and how this helps to alter and shape the person they become later in life. This includes not only a person’s personality, but also how he or she interprets events that are occurring in day to day life. One of the most unique ways of observing this link can be seen through art work. Every artist has a unique past and history that allows them to create works that conceptualize their own personal views. Factors such as media, color, symbols, form, etc. reflect how an artist is able to portray something as well as how it can invoke intended emotions from the observer. Every time a work is studied, more and more details can be seen which are commonly overlooked. It is similar to the reading of a novel. An artist’s work attempts to tell a story that can be deciphered through a detailed analysis. Vincent van Gogh is a prime example of all of these concepts. In fact, he was relatively unknown as an artist and never really profited from his works as a means of support for himself. He was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands on the 30th of March, 1853. His father, Theodorus van Gogh served as a pastor at a local church, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus, van Gogh’s mother, was an artist. Van Gogh was one of three children, having an older and a younger brother. In fact, van Gogh has the exact same name and birthday as his older brother. Tragically, his older brother died at birth leaving van Gogh already seeing his exact name and birthday on a tombstone.
