The Life of Vincent Van Gogh One of the most known post-impressionist artists is Vincent Van Gogh. He came to Paris right in time to see the eighth and last impressionist exhibition. Vincent Van Gogh studied another artist closely, Georges Seurat. It is said that Van Gogh lived a very difficult life that was frowned upon, but became one of the most famous artists in history. Vincent Van Gogh was born March 30th, 1853 in Netherlands. Van Gogh lived a very interesting life. He was the son of a pastor brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere. He was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence and struggled with his identity and direction. The works of his early period were very somber and sharply lit. He used a technique called impasto, which was dashes of thickly painted color. The viewers did not like the the way this looked, they called it a “refined mess”. Over a time period of roughly 15 months, he made approximately 200 paintings, over 100 drawings and watercolors and approximately 200 letters. A lot of his letters were to his brother Theo. These letters later helped to interpret a lot of his paintings which became masterpieces now selling for millions and millions of dollars. His Starry Night piece has been a permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941. He has another painting called Van Gogh’s Bedroom which has had three versions made and are hanging in different parts of the world, one being in Chicago, Illinois. Toward the end of his life, Van Gogh could not bring himself to write anymore, although he was still able to draw and paint. At the age of 37, Van Gogh died. His death was believed to be a suicide, however, there are some that say someone killed him. After his death, his reputation grew steadily among colleagues, art critics, dealers and collectors.
