Vincent Willem Van Gogh lived from March 30, 1853 to July 29, 1890. He was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who greatly impacted the 20th-century art movement. His work is memorable for its brush strokes, vivid use of colors, the emotions within the artworks, and his artworks overall appearance and beauty. He is one of the most famous and influential artists of western art history. In his time, he made about 2,100 pieces of art, which include 860 oil paintings. He did many of his artworks in his last two years. The artworks include landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits. He was the oldest surviving son of his parents, Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Theodorus Van Gogh. His father was a country minister and his mother was an artist who loved nature, drawing, and watercolors, which she passed down to her son. He had two younger brothers, Theo and Cor, anda three younger sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and Willemien. In 1864, Vincent began going to school in his hometown of Zevenbergen. He studied french, english, and german there. After he finished school, in June, 1873, Vincent attends Goupil and Cie, art dealers from paris with a branch established in the Hague, London by his Uncle Vincent. He admired the English culture there and in his free time went to art galleries and became a fan of George Eliot and Charles Dickens writings. Vincent fell in love with his landlady’s daughter, Eugenie Loyer, however, when he proposed to her she rejected him. This lead Van Gogh into a mental breakdown. He threw away all of his books except for the Bible. His life was now devoted to God, therefore he told all the customers art was worthless and got angry at them.
