Vincent Van Gogh is a widely known painter throughout the world for multiple reasons. His paintings weren’t just paintings, they were life experiences. Van Gogh’s life was an emotional and mental rollercoaster. Every single one of his paintings contained a story behind them. The visual aspect seemed as if they were full of motion. His painting techniques seemed to be impeckable. During the time period in which he was working on art, there was a big movement called the Impressionism Movement. Many may think that Vincent Van Gogh’s life was easy and full of riches due to the fact that his artwork sold for so much money, but little do they know, his life was full of struggles. He was the oldest of 5 other siblings and his family was considered the lower spectrum of the middle class. For many years Van Gogh saw himself as a replacement for his parents. Shortly before Vincent was conceived, his parents, Anna Carbentus and Theodorus, had a stillborn child whom they named, Vincent Willem. When Vincent found out about his deceased brother, he felt as if he was a replacement child due to the fact that they named him the same name and he was born shortly after the previous birth. Vincent was also diagnosed with severe depression as a young adult. His diagnosis sent him into a downward spiral of bad decisions. His depression got so bad that he was sent to Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. Shortly after that he ended his life at the age of 37 while living with the man in the portrait, Dr. Gachet. The techniques a painter uses is what really makes them who they are, and if they stand out enough they may even make them famous. Van Gogh was popular for 3 specific techniques he used in just about every painting he created. When people think of portraits they usually assume that it is just going to be a still painting of a person, but not with Van Gogh. In the painting Dr.Gachet, the entire image including the person, is filled with the small brush strokes that are a slightly lighter color.. These marks create contrast within the image. They are also painted in the same direction which allows viewers to gain a sense of movement and texture. Another technique Van Gogh is known for using is a darker paint pallet. Many of his paintings such as The Starry Night, The Church at Auvers, and The Portrait of Dr.Gachet are painted with a dark blue color pallet. In order to create contrast within these paintings he adds in small amounts of yellow and green. These colors maybe found within some of his images to create stars or to show a sense of life through greenery such as plants. Van Gogh’s paintings they often come off as gloomy, but they almost always have a source of bright paint. This may resemble a sense of hope, or beauty within all of the darkness.
