Vincent van Gogh, in the years of 1888-1889, painted his Sunflower Series which were intended to decorate Paul Gauguin’s room in the Yellow House which van Gogh rented in Arles, France. The Yellow House was made into a studio in order for both artists to be able to make art together. Van Gogh planned to paint a dozen or so Sunflower paintings, however was only able to complete 4, Three Sunflowers in a Vase, Still Life: Vase with Five Sunflowers, Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers and Still Life: Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers. Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers is thought to show van Gogh’s hope and happiness as his friend, Paul Gauguin had moved in with him with the hopes of making more art together. That is shown by the use of the bright. The paintings were also influenced by Japanese art by the obvious use of bold contour lines with flat colors. Van Gogh only used three different shades of yellow to create the flowers and the color blue for the background to demonstrate that you can create beautiful art with a lot to symbolize by using only a certain number of colors and paints, however what had the most impact was the type of “van Gogh known” brush strokes that show the depths of all the Sunflowers.
