In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart, location is paramount in understanding how the characters feel and work in the world in which they live. Hansberry’s Ruth Younger is trapped in her tiny apartment, sleeping in a makeshift bedroom and acting as a mother to her own family and to the family that she works for. Her home has transformed into a prison, and Ruth is desperate to escape. Similarly, Henley’s Lenny MaGrath is the last granddaughter, playing caregiver for her dying grandfather as her sisters have long moved out of the oversized home. Lenny, stigmatized by her inability to have children and endless need to be nurturing, is only occupying a home that belongs to Old Granddaddy even as she has been the only one living there for three months.

In this short story, it was clearly seen that the protagonist was physically and psychologically isolated from her community. This abhorrence initiated within the protagonist’s own household. Her family implied that something was wrong with her—that she used to be a lovely baby and that she was cursed (263).
In her hauntingly beautiful novel Tell The Wolves I’m Home, author Carol Rifka Brunt introduces readers to June Elbus, a distinctively shy, sensitive, and gloomy teenage girl growing up in New York in 1986-1987. June’s favorite uncle and person Finn has AIDS, a disease that takes his life in the early part of the book. June learns that Finn had a lover, Toby. At the end of the story readers see June and Toby forming an unlikely friendship. Regardless of the fact that she does so unconventionally, Carol Rifka Brunt tells the story Tell The Wolves I’m Home as a coming of age story.

The story “Where is Here” ,written by Joyce Oates, begins when a man goes to look at the house he grew up in. He knocks on the door and the dad invites him in, but he declines and just walks around the outer parts of the house. While he is walking outside, the mom of the house tells him to come inside and walk around. The house brings back many good and bad memories that help the reader piece together the strange man's past. The short story, “Where is Here,” has a bleak setting, tortured characters, and supernatural events which help make it an American gothic piece.
