In the essay, “A History of Violence”, the author Segun Akinsanya reveals information about his childhood explaining his troublesome life. He goes into detail on how he contributed to the downfall throughout his youth years. Segun was influenced by many factors that caused the negative outcome throughout his childhood, such as, the negative contributions from family, the instability of his child and teenage years, and his own struggle to find his identity of self-worth. Segun’s family played an immense part, they contributed to the negative actions throughout his life, he honestly didn’t have any family support or stability.
The abuse of human life that has happened over the course of history is something that no one should have ever experienced, although similar violence still goes on today. It is a question to ask as in the book Night, “Can this be true? This is the twentieth century, not the Middle Ages. Who would allow such crimes to be committed?” Although people have grown over time to accept people of different color, religion and believes there is still hate crimes in the world today.
Throughout the world, violence has occurred in some form in each individual’s life since the beginning of time. Violence is any action, inaction, or structural arrangement that results in physical or nonphysical harm to one or more animals. There are three types of violence to classify the act, which is Institutional, Interpersonal, and Structural. Within each type of violence are specific categories that occur, such as family, religion, educational, corporate, and even economical violence.
In the essay titled “Police Brutality”, Danna Hernandez uses rhetorical devices to declare that police brutality is dreadful. She utilizes anecdotes to support her claim, pathos to persuade the audience to agree with her argument by producing an emotional response, and imagery to illustrate her hardships caused by police brutality. Danna does this in order to make the general public realize that police brutality is a significant issue that should not be treated as a trend. Danna Hernandez uses anecdote to support her argument. The vast majority of the essay is an anecdote that tells of the tragic death of her son due to unjustified gun usage by a police officer(which constitutes as police brutality) and the emotional consequences that followed.

Addressing police brutality must be done with empathy for and awareness of the plight of the African-American community. Historically speaking, there has not been a period wherein the African-American community was not inhibited by institutionalized barriers. American enslavement provided the foundation for later oppressive provisions that are especially prevalent within inner-city, predominantly Black communities, which, incidentally, many of the prominent instances of police brutality have taken place. Political regimes like the “war on drugs,” “school to prison pipeline,” and mass incarceration criminalize and dehumanize the African-American community, and thus affect the collective mindset of the population. I believe that an imperative first step that has not been taken is acknowledging the effects these may have on the Black community.
A simple act of violence can genuinely affect an individual's state of mind. Through violence, individuals feel empowered and are tempted to prolong their violent nature. This results in one heinous act, following with worse violence. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of A Boy Soldier, both authors effectively highlight a theme, that violence will ultimately lead to more violence.
Another fact Pinker uses to illustrate how the violence started and how we are where we stand today in society is “Forensic archaeology – a kind of “Csi : Paleolithic” can estimate rates of violence from the proportion of skeletons in an ancient site with bashed in skulls, decapitations or arrowheads embedded in bones.” With this evidence from the text the reader may also conclude that not only was the era of primitive society barbaric, but those who committed the crimes didn’t value human life. In contrast to this Pinker’s uses the fact, “On average 15% of people in pre-state eras died violently compared to about 3% of the earliest states”. This evidence from the article illustrates to the readers that before the earliest states were made more than one fifth of people died from violent deaths in the world’s
Synthesis Research Paper Everyday growing up as a young black male we have a target on our back. Society was set out for black males not to succeed in life. I would always hear my dad talk about how police in his younger days would roam around the town looking for people to arrest or get into an altercation with. As a young boy growing up I couldn’t believe some of the things he said was happening. However as I got older I would frequently hear about someone getting killed by the police force.
Minorities in the community have been subjected to violence by law enforcement in the United States for some time. This violence is called police brutality and it is unacceptable. The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are a part of a dangerous and stressful career that can involve risky situations that must be controlled. Sometimes police are put in situations that excessive force is needed.
What is violence? Violence is, as described by Google,”behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Strength of emotion or an unpleasant or destructive natural force. And the unlawful exercise of physical force or intimidation by the exhibition of such force.” Both 1984 by George Orwell, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley have violence threaded throughout each novel.
The 20th century labelled, “the most violent century in human history” (golding). To explain the violence of the 20th century if one must look at all events of the intentionally harm done to others. This includes the violence caused by the two hundred and fifty-six wars inluding World War One and two, The Vietnam War, The Cold War which where almost 108 milion human lives have persihed and others haunted by the gruesome details that occurred during these events. One must also look at the the violence caused by seven genocides including the Holocaust, Armenian Genocide and Rwandan Genocide which killed eighteen million people.
Springer (2009) believes that violence is a gross stereotype which is associated with the depiction of the culture in the context of 'war in terror '. African, Asian and Islamic cultures are said to be highly violent. Thus, any discourse that suggests violence should be viewed as contextually specific, because it is bound to particular places in which the culture of violence is formed. Therefore,
