When people think of someone in their family who provides for them many think of their mom or dad. Although, that is not always the case. Darry is the older brother and provider to Sodapop Curtis and Ponyboy Curtis in the book The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton. Darry’s parents died in a car accident so he was left raising his two younger brothers, which are sixteen and fourteen. Although Darry can be harsh, he still cares deeply about his brothers and their lives.

I think what Hinton meant by the term “outsider” is because the gang weren’t like most greasers and they were definitely not socs so they were outside the normal social groups. I think this because Ponyboy and the gang aren’t searching for fights and they are respectful of the rules (most of the time) and they are not high class and rude. So I believe outsider means not in the regular social classes and they are there own thing and they wouldn’t change for anyone. I think Hinton was referencing Ponyboy and the gang as well as Randy and Cherry.

In the United States, every year there are around 2,000 gang-related homicides and in the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, it explores the issues of gang violence, and teenagers in gangs. Around 40% of all members in gangs are teenagers, who are getting involved in some dangerous things very early in life. In the novel The Outsiders, the “Greasers” which is a gang of all teenagers, fight other gangs and commit serious crimes such as murder. We as a society need to pinpoint why teenagers join gangs and stop them beforehand. We also need to help people get out of gangs if they are already in one.
The novel “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton depicts the theme of violence predominantly. This novel portrays how violence leaves physical and emotional scars. SE Hilton explores the effect of living in a place where a teenager can't even walk home by himself and where fear is the foremost emotion. Violence was much more powerful than we imagine not only because it led tremendous dis- aster, but also due to the deep impact on individuals. In the book of the Outsiders, the violence of Johnny’s family, the other greasers, and their opposing gangs, the Socials, strongly affected Johnny. The Violence of Johnny’s family impacts Johny’s natural instincts, which means that some of his characteristics were already fixed since he was born, and influenced him in daily life. Johnny grew up in a family without care, love, and understanding.
