If you’ve never heard of the popular game series Final Fantasy then you’ve probably lived under a rock. Final Fantasy is one of the most popular roleplaying video games to date, spanning more than fifteen sequels and four movie adaptations. The game is about a set of heroes off to battle the forces of evil or an antagonistic ruler. Sounds interesting, right? Unfortunately, what’s not so interesting to hear is that a 16 year old Spanish teenager named, Jose Rabadan Parlo had killed both his parents and his younger sister after he had said to be on an “avenging mission” for one of the main characters in Final Fantasy 7. From TV shows like “Tom and Jerry” and “Spongebob Squarepants” to the plethora of action movies and sometimes comedy movies that depict an overwhelming amount of violence, violent media surrounds us everywhere we go. Because of this, most people would willingly argue that the production of violent video games is far from the root cause of the violent behavior in both teens and adults. To an extent, it is true that video games cannot be singled out as the only source of violent media but there is no denying that violent video games contribute to a culture wherein violence is made common and comfortable in our society. One example as to how video games have influenced violent acts is when 17 year old Lamar Roberts and 16 year old Heather Trujillo beat a 7 year old girl to death because they were imitating a part of the popular video game series Mortal Kombat. The two were charged with 36 years and 18 years in prison respectively. According to Dr. Anderson and his group from the University of Iowa, after performing meta analysis on 130 studies that included 130,000 participants, it was found that exposure to violent video games caused either short or long term aggression. Empathy and pro social behavior also decreased. There also have been many cases of video game addiction all over the world. In some severe cases, video game addiction has led to death. One example is when a Chinese man named Yang Lee, died after consecutively playing for 36 hours. Although video game addiction is not only limited to violent video games, it is important to consider that this is another detrimental effect that can be brought by playing violent video games which can eventually become a factor in producing overly aggressive behavior in people. In the end, despite the argument that exposure to violent video games do not primarily cause aggressive or abnormal behavior, it is hard to ignore the instances in which these two things
