The topic I am going to focus on throughout this paper is the relation of drug and gang violence in both Japan and the United States of America. This topic is an important subject because both countries struggle everyday with both gang related violence and drug violence in the major parts of Japan Such as Tokyo. This in compared to the problem that The United States has because most of the gangs here have a bigger influence for selling drugs and committing other gang related activities, due to the larger amounts of people that they can either recruit or have join the gang. In recent years, the drug dealers have found smarter ways to transfer their drugs throughout the country Japan kingpins and gangs such as the yakuza gang are starting to get smart with dealing illegal substances. The gang members are no longer going through the streets selling their drugs; they are working out of night clubs and privately owned bars This is making it that much harder for the police to crack down on the dealing of drugs. They are also using the internet to sell and distribute them across the county Japanese government officials are have a tough time catching the gangs in the act also because there are so many other small groups in the gang that the higher and more powerful leaders give the substances to just so they aren’t felling the heat from the Japanese police. Another reason gangs like to run illegal drug smuggling business and selling them, is because Japan is known for not having a great abundance of illegal drugs that people can get their hands on (Hays, AJ 2013.) So the gangs knowing this they see it as a great opportunity to expand the operation and get a greater amount of income off selling the drugs. With knowing that it is hard for people in Japan to get their hands on illegal drugs and how the gangs are now coming up with new methods to get their hands on them the government officials made it so there was a zero tolerance law now in effect when it comes to dealing with illegal drugs. The zero tolerance law came into place in the early 1990’s they wanted to try and make it clear to the people there that they don’t want to have anything to do with the use of drugs over there, the law is so strict that if you are caught bringing drugs that are considered medicine such as allergy medicine and vitamins.
