In Panem, there is only one source of media for the citizens, A TV channel controlled by the Capitol and that is highly influential. This TV channels brings the arena of the Hunger Games into the homes of people in all districts and it therefore not only plays a large role in the normalization of violence in Panem but a very direct one. The media perpetuates the normalization of violence through what it portrays as the main event of the year, The Hunger Games. The Games are televised and presented as the highest form of entertainment with the media focusing on the romance, intrigue, adventure and entertainment rather than on the loss of human life, torture and violence. It emphasize the entertainment of the audience-- who themselves are also victims of the violent social order-- and ignores the pain suffered by the tributes as well as their deaths. The media also exposes the citizens of Panem to uncensored violence. These uncensored acts of violence are done by children essentially since the tributes of the Hunger Games are kids between twelve and eighteen years of age. The receivers of the violent acts of murder and torment are also children. If they were not desensitized and distracted from anything but their own entertainment and pleasure, they may have a chance to see the plights of the other districts. A desensitized individual cannot sympathize and a sympathetic one might turn against the Capitol. Therefore the Capitol ensure that each Hunger Games is bloodier and more entertaining than the one before it in an effort to keep the Capitol citizens desensitized and by extension, all of
