Violent video games tend to be blamed for unconventional occurrences. Not surprisingly, these occurrences are connected to violence. Regulations have been suggested, some enacted upon. These regulations are linked to a debated topic as to whether or not should violent video games be sold to minors. Labeled as a preventative measure, violent video games should not be restricted to minors. Minors should be able to purchase violent video games since the parents dictate what is good for their child, video games warn users appropriately, and scientific research diluted the connection of violence and video games.
To start off, minors should be able to purchase violent video games since the parents dictate what is good for their child. When considering a video game for a minor, Michael D. Gallagher, President and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, puts it best; “We can all agree that parents are the best arbiters of determining what is right for their children” (Gallagher). Parents stand as a barrier between a violent video game and their child. If the parents decide it is fine to buy a violent video game for their child, the child should be able to play the video game. The link between the two are caused by broad and unsupported assumptions. Video games are a source of entertainment to audiences of all ages, not just minors. People who heavily support the ban on violent video games for minors should direct their energy into the finding the true source of violence. Loading the blame onto violent video games can easily be applied to all other forms of entertainment. Furthermore, video game companies have constantly remarked on the issue with evidence that disprove the claims.
