In the time of 1786, there were many state constitutions that were creating new government with limited powers that had rules to protect the rights of citizen, some banning slavery, and some protecting the rights of criminals. However in this time, citizens had limited religious liberty and had to pay taxes for churches they don't even support until the The Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom, “….declared that no person could be forced to attend a particular church or be required to pay for church with tax money”(page 115). This change meant that the government had no say and could not force you to attend a specific place of worship. These classic liberal principles were important because it was ensuring the separation between God and the state, like how integrated into the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution it says that , “ Congress shall make no law respecting San establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”.
