I was fortunate to grow up in a city where diversity and culture are celebrated, New York City. Home of, one of the biggest fashion capitals on the earth, New York City promotes cultural expression through style, food, and social mobility. Although, it is known as a place of free expression and cultural diversity, in my early adolescent years I’ve witnessed many peers, fall victim to close mindedness. I was a target of bullying due to the dark pigmentation of my skin. The treatment I received by my classmates made me feel inferior, discouraged, and I often questioned if being black was beautiful. My perspective changed drastically when I discovered three reputable magazines, Essence, Ebony, and Instyle, all of which helped me to reimagine my views about black beauty, confidence, and style. In addition, these magazines exposed me to the power of speaking out and using writing as a source of empowerment to regain my identity and self-esteem. Briefly, I would like to extend my educational preparation by attending graduate school. While my current specialization is in Journalism, I recognize that there are a variety of mechanisms that can be leveraged to engage the public. Ultimately, I often imagine myself as the Editor-at-Large at Essence Magazine. I am deeply committed to developing and writing content that focuses on African and African American culture, celebrating beauty, entrepreneurship, and black excellence. This is evidenced by my independent fashion blog, Style Is Her Name, that I use as an outlet to improve my writing skills and raise awareness for African and African-American culture, world issues, and women’s leadership
