Virtue is a key ideal in both religion and philosophy. Virtue is similar to morality, it is how some ones morals lay and more so having virtue is basically having good morals. Religion and philosophy are both areas that virtue is important in practicing either. Religion being defined as “a system of faith and worship”(Media) it makes sense that virtue would play a role. Religion is about following set practices and generally sets down guide lines of what you are supposed to do and what you are not supposed to do. Philosophy is defined as “the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence”(Media) When studying philosophy you are taking a look at why the way things are the way they are. Religion has transformed and evolved and fractured into many different things over time but it has always been there as an explanation of forces we do not understand. Our book tells us that during the Neolithic age “Religion was the central force in these primary civilizations. It provided satisfying explanations for the workings of nature, helped ease the fear of death, and justified traditional rules of morality”(Perry). As time passed and one civilization conquered another religions began to blend together. Cultures all over the world have had spirits and deities to explain the things that could not be explained during that time period. The Greeks were a polytheistic people. Basically they had a god for nearly everything. A god that caused wars and famine, a god that caused earthquakes, floods, lightning, and storms. Apollo was one such god who was the sun god. Christianity is goal oriented in leading a virtuous life because it says that in order to get to heaven you need to live a faithful and virtuous life. Both have a similar outlook on being honest and taking blame when blame is due but they differ on why. The Bible tells us to treat others with respect and dignity and we will go to heaven. Philosophy tells us to treat others with respect and dignity because it is the right thing to do and that is how you find peace. Philosophy is based more on an internal drive to lead a virtuous life while Religion is based on a external goal oriented drive to live a virtuous
