Vision for Leadership “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality “(Warren Bennis 2014). A leader must have a clear vision from the beginning to the end of any business or organization. Whether one is a music director, entrepreneurial, or military leader he, or she should be a visionary with an ability to pick up an idea or mission and declare its goals, or course of action, technically and logistically. At that point the vision must cascade down toward everyone on their respective team. I believe a leader’s excellence of production should meet his or her reality. Ensuring a vision sets the groundwork needed to move toward the success of the vision. A well explained vision allows the team to hear, listen, understand, and be opened to the ideas of the leader. I actually believe I have been gifted to mentor and lead. One factor leaders often fail is to listen to employees, individuals, or members of a class. I have learned when I listen I am able to discern as to why and individual in not progressing in a class, in sport, or as an effective leader. Listening makes mentoring easier. As I talk with various individuals, I am often asked questions regarding their life decisions my first step is to listen which enables me to guide the person in the right direction. A leader does not have all the answers; nevertheless as a leader one must be willing to seek help. Seeking help allows the mentor to give the best advice to the individual he or she is mentoring. Whenever a friend or a soldier ask for advice I often state a quote given to me by a former mentor of mine, “You want to feel that you have the power to bring your full, spirited self to the situation, stripped of the fears, and inhibitions that might typically hold you back” (Reuben Smith). Occasionally those in leadership are afraid and do not bring their spirited self to the situation when mentoring others.
