This visual poster advertisement by MomsDemandAction has raised concerns about gun safety in America in light of the increasing amount of school shootings and mortalities every year. Due to this, more and more parents are getting concerned to send their children to school in fear of what their fate might be, this advertisement is trying to combat this issue by attempting to get America to have more gun sense. The author has implemented Text inside the advertisement and it plays a major role in conveying the overall message using minimal text, it challenges America’s gun laws and its priorities and unrelenting ignorance towards the deadly issue of school shootings. The text in the advertisement provokes the audience to think about the gun laws in America and their effects on children and gives the audience the insight needed to take action on the issue. The first part of the text, ‘One child is holding something that has been banned in America to protect them’, is used to give the audience an opportunity to explore the image and focus on the objects the children are holding and make a subconscious decision that the gun should be the one banned. This text is presented in a white colour which indicates subtly. This tool was used primarily to bring a sense of danger to the classroom environment, which targets teachers, students and parents – implying that they are in danger. Evidently, there was a contrast between the background being the classroom, which is usually associated with a safe learning environment, and the foreground where there was a child holding a gun, which just emphasises the message that the classroom is no longer a safer place. Contrast was also used to further elaborate the main purpose of the advertisement using the little girl with a grim expression holding an assault rifle which is not expected and confuses the audience and sends out a strong message. There were other contrasting elements such as the enormous size of the gun and the small size of the children, implying messages such as guns are not suited for children and should have nothing to do with them, but clearly, America doesn’t care. This leads the audience to want to begin taking action. The purpose of contrasting the classroom and the gun was to show a sense of danger in a place that is commonly known to be a safe place and where parents entrust their kids.
