Vittorio’s loss of innocence occurs as he is exposed to the evil within the society he lives in. As Vittorio faces isolation from those around him he experiences a loss of innocence as he realizes that people can be cruel. Vittorio becomes aware of how easily friends and family can give up on one another. Vitto slowly realizes the evil within the town’s people, which prevents them from truly getting along and truly being a community. He also see’s how his family is being shunned which shows him the wrongful act Christina has committed “his hands gesturing in our direction, but at the last instinct he checked the gesture and suddenly clasped his hands together as if closing us out” (Ricci 84) Vittorio is not oblivious to the fact that his family is being shunned by society showing he is aware of the conflict within the town’s people and his family. Within Lives of the Saints Christina and Vittorio have a very unusual relationship that contributes to his loss of innocence. Christina does not really act like a mother towards him, but more like a sibling which forces Vitto to take on the role of a father/husband figure within the relationship. From a young age Vitto has no choice but to be more mature and self reliant than a normal child at his age. The relationship shared between Vitto and Christina causes him to see her in a sexual way. The fact that Vitto views his mother in a sexual way from an early age shows his lack of innocence. Christina relies on Vitto to take care of her “You’ll take care of me, eh, Vittorio?” (Ricci 19) instead of her father, showing he has a lot of responsibility.
