Vivian is a 26-year-old African American woman. She has been diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and was recently hospitalized for acute psychosis. Vivian believed that people were out to harm her and she was found locked in a room of her house, holding a butcher knife to protect herself. Prior to being placed in the inpatient psychiatric hospital, Vivian lived in an apartment with her mother in Kingston, Pennsylvania. She also is a well known hair stylist at a high-end hair salon. Vivian’s employer is supportive and noted that Vivian may return back to part-time work of her full-time job at any time. Vivian also wants to return to work along with returning home. This assessment will take about 30 minutes to administer to Vivian. The COPM is a semi-structured interview that aims to identify client’s specific goals, along with measuring the individual’s perception of their occupational performance (CITE). The COPM can be used in any setting and with any individual who is 7 years old or older (CITE). The use of the COPM allows the individual to identify specific needs in the areas of self-car, leisure, and productivity (CITE). Once the individual describes their occupational performance in these three areas, they will then rate them by importance (CITE). From the individuals results, the therapist will determine the top five most important activities and discuss with the client if these are the activities that they want to work on improving (CITE). The COPM is a beneficial assessment to perform with Vivian because, it allows her to express the areas of her life that she believes may be holding her back from engaging in full participation when completing her daily occupations. Allowing Vivian to rate her current level of performance and satisfaction on those activities will also provide an insight into which areas of Vivian’s life she can recognize her strengths and weaknesses. The COPM overall, will also be able to help examine Vivian’s overall motivation to complete the activities, and any type of routine or patterns that’s he may follow. Even though there is no specific type of environment that this assessment needs to be administrated in, it will be given to her within her hospital room, in order to provide comfort and privacy, in relation to her
