Theories of vocational education are the foundations or framework upon which vocational education is built upon. This paper attempts to examine different theories of vocational education as it relates to self-reliance. The relevant concepts are defined and discussed. Vocational education theories are stated to be effective and efficient to learning experiences in the classroom as a replica of what is obtainable in the practical life situation, making the theories basis for providing individuals with the required skills to be self-reliant. The understanding and application of these theories are necessary for effective teaching of vocational education subjects. Vocational education is that part of the total experience of individual whereby he learns successfully to carry on a gainful occupation in order to be self-reliant. This education that prepares individuals in any society for an occupation is built on a framework or foundation. This framework or foundation or postulation about what ought to be in vocational education is termed theories. Theories provides goals, norms and standards. Theories are body of knowledge which may or may not be associated with a particular explanatory model. To theorize is to develop this body of knowledge (Thomas, 2007). Theories of vocational education are referred to the scientific theories, a well confirmed type of explanation of nature, made in a way consistent with scientific methods and fulfilling the criteria required by modern science. Vocational theories are reliable, rigorous and comprehensive form of knowledge upon which vocational education is built.
