It is when patients want to end their lives because of the constant sufferings caused by their illnesses. Euthanasia is a method of ending a patient’s life carried out by doctors and the use of drugs. In 1995, voluntary euthanasia was legalised in Northern Territory and only four patients were able to use it with the assistance of Dr Philip Nitschke before the Australian Senate repealed it in 1997. Society needs to refrain from making decisions relating to others’ lives, especially the government who should definitely refrain themselves. It has been seventeen years since patients had the option of ending their life in many painless ways. Two of the most common painless ways were by injection or the prescription of pills. After receiving these treatments, the patients’ pain will disappear and they will be able to rest in peace. Dr Nitschke has created the “Peaceful” pill to relieve the patient’s pain and put them into a deep sleep forever. He has received four awards and has been nominated seven times for “Australian of the Year”. To be able to be nominated for that award, one must have had a significant contribution for the Australian community, had demonstrated excellence in their field and is an inspirational role model for the Australian community. Dr Nitschke has been nominated seven times by the Australian community which shows that many approve and are inspired by his hard work and effort of creating a death pill for the terminally ill patients. Many Australian citizens support voluntary euthanasia and it is time that the government should also fully support it and legalise it. The Hippocratic Oath and Prohibition of Killing do not allow voluntary euthanasia, which sounds plausible. This oath’s meaning is to “do no harm” so if it really goes by its words then it would mean
