Given that I was born and raised in Puerto Rico by two Haitian parents, I’ve always had a strong concern for the poor living conditions in developing countries. For this reason, I am deeply passionate for international development focused on education, human rights and health. I consider working with the Peace Corps one of the highest possible callings. My wonderful years in academic philosophy studying Ethics and Foreign Languages have honed my ability to communicate well and sharpened my research skills. Yet, my professional goals in international affairs and development require a broad, multidisciplinary approach to program analysis, research and theory.
After completing my B.S in Community Human Services at Empire State College, I felt extremely fulfilled in my accomplishment. I felt like I did accomplish my ultimate goal which was becoming qualified to work with Juveniles in the system to help make a difference in their lives. I thought I could have been a unique asset to the system where I can be of assistance in problem solving alongside my affiliates and bosses working together in unison to accomplish the same goal, which is to be effective administrators to foster growth and productivity in the lives of the youths. However, I quickly learn or come to a realization that our children of tomorrow need more than just an attentive ear, a shoulder to lean on, and an empathetic individual. In
Rutgers University School of Social Work is an intense and competitive program that is well-known for shaping some of the finest and highest skilled social workers today. As an aspiring social worker, I want to attend a MSW program that will challenge and prepare me for a successful career and I know that Rutgers University School of Social Work is the institution that will do just that. As an undergraduate law and justice major, I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in the field of law as a defense attorney. However, when asked why, I was never able to provide an answer.
Another story of the Bermuda Triangle is also the strange disappearance of the ship the Marine Sulfur Queen. The ship was built in 1944 as a T2 tanker whose purpose was to ship oil during World War II (Bhattacharya, 2015). However, once the war had come to an end, the ship had been altered to instead ship molten sulfur. For this to be possible, the ship had to be remodeled internally, adding on huge sulphur carrying tanks.
Ways in which I depict service include volunteering at the Brian Adams Benefit to help raise money for a cancer patient whose family is struggling, helping clean up the Shawnee United Methodist Church property by picking up trash and helping with landscaping, ringing the bell to raise money for the Salvation Army, packing and delivering food at the West Ohio Food Bank for families in need, along with helping prepare food for needy families who come and stay at the church. I feel it is important to try to help as much of the community as possible, which is why I also volunteer at the Humane Society of Allen County. Showing a respect for not only my own community, but communities around my own, is something I pride myself on. I would like to participate in the SEEK and CD Student Leadership conference because I would like the opportunity to enhance my leadership skills. I have been fortunate to get into Lehman college through the SEEK because I couldn’t have paid for college without this program so I really want to do more to give back to my campus and SEEK. I feel that this program will help me take on a leadership position to give back to my community. I also want to reach out to others on my campus and community and work towards a better world.
The reason I want to volunteer at Sharp Grossmont Hospital is because I want experience working with people of all ages and being able to communicate with others properly when given a task and being able to complete things when I’m told. When I grow up I want to become a teacher. You might be wondering why a future teacher wants to volunteer at a hospital and the reason behind this is that I want to be able to work in different situations. There isn’t a really big difference between a teacher and a Doctor or a person who works in the medical field. Both of these jobs require you to help others and be able to communicate clearly with either students or patients and even your co-workers.
I am applying for the Community Foundation scholarship. Growing up in middle Tennessee has been a blessing for me and my family because of the many opportunities that the region offers. During high school, I participated in youth orchestra programs in Murfreesboro and Nashville through the Blair School of Music. I was accepted into the Music City Girls Lead program at Lipscomb University, where I learned valuable skills in leadership and connected with inspiring women in the area. Through this program, I was referred to Rutherford Cable, a networking organization for women in the Rutherford Country and middle Tennessee area.
When I was a kid, I was very daring and curious child. Trying something new and discovering new things were like a magnet to me. When I think of the National Student Exchange Program I remember my childhood, when the passion for discovering new things was insatiable. I am currently a senior student and I know that it is time to endeavor something new.
My reasons for wanting to serve Peace Corps Volunteer are personal and intellectual. First of all, I want to share the knowledge I have acquired throughout my life by making myself available and becoming part of something bigger. I’ve had the opportunity to attend school and I recently completed a graduate degree; this has been a great accomplishment not only for me, but for my family as well. Therefore serving as a PCV would be a rewarding experience not only for me but for those who have supported me throughout my life, since I will contribute towards a bigger cause by helping to improve the lifestyle of less fortunate people. For as long as I can remember, I have taken pride in helping others. As I entered kindergarten, I was introduced to scouting and never looked back. By the time I finished middle school, I had completed hundreds of community service hours with my Boy Scouts troop - scouting for food, flag retirement ceremonies, serving as honor guard in community events, preparing care packages for deployed members of the military, and providing labor to complete Eagle Scout’s community service projects. I fondly remember making Christmas cards, which we delivered to nursing home residents while giving our best rendition of Silent Night. Service is being able to spread knowledge and guidance to others. The individuals who are in need of assistance can vary from elders, youth, the homeless, etc. There are multiple ways to provide services, such as feeding the homeless, clothes drive, helping with a boys and girls club, etc. People in need have comfort knowing there is someone who will stretch there hand and knowledge. Life is unpredictable; I have realized that I could be the next homeless person on the street asking for money.
Doctor of Social Work Program Application Personal Statement Ashley Newberry LCSW, LISW As I child, I was introduced to the human service field in a unique way. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
I believe that the mission of a student ambassador is to promote the vision, growth and quality of University of Maryland, by optimizing the experience of current students, prospective students and special guests. I would like to be a student ambassador primarily because I want to get more involved with the university; not to mention the positive impact it will have on my CV. I would also gain experience in public speaking, building friendships with fellow ambassadors and develop my leadership skills. Furthermore, this offers a responsibility that can be both challenging and extremely rewarding.
Volunteering is what directed me to pursue my career as a social worker. It has always been clear to me and I been volunteering off and on since I was 15 years old. I have continued to volunteer while attending college, with activities with feeding the homeless, helping kids with school, helping build home for people who lost them and more. I enjoyed being part of something great that can improve myself and help someone’s life and make a difference in one’s life as well as my own. In my career as a social worker, I want and will make sure to continue to have these experiences and I believe it will make me a better person.
