Any country’s growth and economy relies on its leaders. However, it depends on country’s citizen that how they choose their political leaders. The voters play a huge role in our political system. Abraham Lincoln stated that “The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” In today’s world, the voting systems can make a big difference in political elections. United States use simple majority voting system for both the house of our congress and most of their elections, which is also known as the “first past the post”. In this voting system, the candidate, who gets most votes, becomes the winner of election. There are two other voting systems, Instant runoff voting system and Proportional Representation, popular in the world. On the other side, the candidate who gets second or third most votes gets nothing. For example, in one constituency, if Republican gets 45% of votes, democrat gets 35% of votes, and the other party candidate get 20% of votes then the Republican gets the seat. Therefore, other voters, who voted for the parties except Republican, do not get their choice of representative. Similarly, in party list method of proportional representation, political parties make the list of candidates; therefore, in many cases, voters do not get their choice of representative. On the other side, instant runoff voting (IRV) system allows voters to choose more than one candidates. For example, in IRV, voters select candidates in their choice of rank. Therefore, if their first choice candidate does not win, then their vote can count for their second choice.
