Recently, in Nevada, the issue of whether or not to require a Voter ID has taken center stage with proponents declaring it would protect against fraud and opponents arguing it’s just a ploy to hinder minority voters. “It’s a solution in search of a problem meant to disenfranchise low income and communities of color” protests Bob Fulkerson, Executive Director of Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada. Personally, I believe that if people are required to show ID when using a credit card or picking up a prescription then how can we not require people to show ID when picking who will run Nevada’s government. Yet the main argument of those who appose the act is that it is racist which is canard because it is just as easy for African-American and Hispanics to get an ID as it is a Caucasian man or woman. Unless of course you are here illegally and are trying to vote, then it would be very difficult to get an ID, which leads to why we need the Voter ID act to prevent fraud. Those who criticize the Voter ID act in Nevada declare that voter fraud is almost non existent and that there is no proof of fraud but Assemblyman John Moore asks “How Nevadans would know if there is voter fraud if identification is not required. In fact former Assemblywoman Sharon Angle, when specifically asked if she had found examples of voter impersonation in Nevada, says that “No but that there is anomalous activity going on in Nevada elections that is not easily explained.” Even Sharon Angle, who is against the voter ID act, admits that there are discrepancies in Nevada's election system and it is my belief that the Voter ID legislation would help eliminate
