Introduction The United States has had voter suppression occur since the constitution was made in 1787. Originally, the country limited voting to only white men who owned land. As the years went by, more people gained the right to vote and after the Civil War, all black men could vote. However, voter suppression laws made it so only certain people could vote. This practice still occurs in the country today both in the federal government and state governments. Claim Voter suppression still occurs in the 21st century to minority groups across the United States and has been since the country was first formed. For example, one study reported that nearly 5.7 million non-citizens voted in the 2008 election. It also reported that many of these people voted for Barack Obama. This startling statistic shows that this is a real issue that has effects on US elections. If the election had been closer, it could have had an impact and changed the result. This study helps prove that there are non-citizens voting and it is not just a small percentage, but instead a sizeable portion of the voters. In addition to illegal votes, there is voter fraud everywhere. It has been proven that 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters, 12 million records contain an incorrect address, and 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state. This statistic proves that the voting system itself is broken and that it must be remade. However, it also shows all of the possible ways people may vote illegally and this needs to addressed. The 2016 election reported that nearly 800,000 non-citizens voted illegally. This number cannot be proven and is most likely less than the actual number, but it still shows the large amount of illegal votes. This is an alarming number because this was a recent election in which the problem still occurred. Upon looking at the statistics, it is obvious that there is a problem and therefore a solution is needed.
