The Vietnam War started in 1962 and ended in 1972. On the same year, the communist from the North, gained control over The South and took over in 1975.
From 1975 to 1990 many people left Vietnam by boats and fled, they became Vietnamese refugees or boat people. 60% of the boat people were lucky to come to a country they liked, Another 40% died at sea, many people died of from dehydration, sickness, drowning or were killed by Thailand's pirates.
Before 1975, Vuong Thanh father’s, life was a good and normal life. He had a 11 people in his family, He had 8 brothers and 1 sister. his family worked in a grocery store. During the War when communists were taking over, Vuong Thanh’s father knew that he and his family lives have now changed

All of Voung Thanh’s father's, brothers were lucky enough to escape all at once but Voung Thanh’s father was not lucky enough to escape, he had tried to escaped 7 times but he was jailed twice.
The first time that he jailed was for six months and the second time was for one year he payed money to get out of jail. In 1984 Vuong Thanh’s father, left Vietnam he was on a small 8m long and 3m wide, unseaworthy boat with fifty other people crowded in it. After seven days later he had arrived in Malaysia.
After he arrived he went to refugee camp for 9 months. After 9 months his brother sponsored him to go to Melbourne, Australia in 1985 in spring. Vuong Thanh father felt really strange when he got off the bus from Melbourne airport. He stayed at Midway Hostel. He couldn’t find a job because he had poor english It was hard for him. Later he moved out of the Hostel because his friend had found him a job.
