Vulnerable populations in the Middle East are often ignored or overshadowed by other issues. Women are considered less than a man and treated as such, subjecting them to abuse; refugees have difficulty obtaining their status and live under poor conditions; migrants are treated as modern day slaves and abused. Women, refugees, and migrants are already at a disadvantage at the social level, while legal and political factors serve to compound their vulnerability by denying their basic human rights and protections.
Women in the Middle East face trials that are not only communally sanctioned, but also legally reinforced and allowed. Many countries in the Middle East have laws in place that dismiss a crimes severity, like a man beating his wife or killing of female relatives for the sake of honor, under the pretense of crimes of passion. They live among the citizens or they make a home in refugee camps. Looking specifically at Jordan, in the Zaatari refugee camp there are cramped living quarters both inside makeshift homes, as well as outside with buildings and tents shoved as close together as possible. Conditions are deplorable and many refugees desire to leave the camp but are unable. There is a law in Jordan that keeps refugees within the camp unless they have a Jordanian citizen who will come and vouch for them. Those who leave illegally do not receive aid (Hall, 2013). The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees does not allow for a refugees freedom of movement to be restricted. However, Jordan did not sign the convention so it has no international obligation to carry out the policy agreed upon at the convention.
