The Vietnam War started in 1962 and ended in 1972. After the war in 1975, communists gained control over the North and South Vietnam. Vietnam declared independence after World War 2. France still ruled until 1954 defeat by communist forces under Ho Chi Minh. When the communist jailed Vietnamese people they took their freedom and religion away from them.The Vietnamese people had to flee because of the war. They were in an overcrowded, hazardous, unseaworthy boat. Filled with a loads of people. Most people on the trip to Australia died at sea due to dehydration, pirate attacks, sickness and drowning.
Vuong Thanh’s father had 1 sister and 8 brothers. One of those brothers sponsored him whilst on his journey. They planned to leave Vietnam and they did.

Vuong Thanh’s Father and his wife worked at a grocery store. They worked almost everyday to provide for their children, so that they have a good education. After the Vietnam War, Vuong Thanh’s Father fled from Vietnam in a very overcrowded boat that was very dangerous. Many Vietnamese people came to Australia by boat from 1975 - 1990. Vuong Thanh’s Father escaped 7 times and was jailed twice.
In 1984 he arrived in Malaysia after a week at sea. The boat was really small and had about 50 people in it. When he arrived in Malaysia he stayed in a refugee camp for 9 months.
In 1985 Vuong Thanh’s Father arrived in Australia and lived in Melbourne. Where he stayed in a hostel, had poor English and had no job which would of been really different for him.
One of his brothers sponsored him on his journey to Australia, which would of been a big help. I would imagine that it would of been really challenging for him in Australia.
In 1999 Vuong Thanh’s Father and his family moved to Sydney which was completely different for him. His children went to a great school and the whole family were very happy to be living in Sydney-
