African-American historian W.E.B Dubois illustrated how the Civil War brought the problems of African-American experiences into the spotlight. As a socialist, he argued against the traditional Dunning interpretations and voiced opinions about the failures and benefits of the Civil War era, which he branded as a ‘splendid failure’. The impacts of Civil War era enabled African-Americans to “form their own fraternal organizations, worship in their own churches and embrace the notion of an activist government that promoted and safeguarded the welfare of its citizens.”
Malcolm was very upset that African Americans were treated as slaves and the way that white people treated other races as well. He describes that withholding history from history books was dishonest and he felt that white people were opportunists. The dishonesty ruined his faith in the country. From founding the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, to his influential book The Souls of Black Folk, he always found an accurate yet abstract way of verbalizing the strives of African Americans as well as making platforms for them to be known. Although he had less power than most of the bigger named African American leaders of his time, W.E.B Dubois’ overweighing strengths verses weaknesses, accurate and creative analogies, leadership style, and the successful foundations he stood for demonstrates his ability to be both realistic and accurate in his assessment since emancipation. Once he was released from prison, he became one of the movements leading ministers. After years of single handedly caring for her six kids, Louis Little had been declared mentally insane and had been institutionalized, sending her kids to separate foster homes. In the eighth grade, Malcolm X was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. After answering with “a lawyer”, his teacher told him that his goal was “unrealistic for a nigger”.
In his 1915 book, The Negro in the United States, W.E.B. DuBois wrote, "There was one thing that the white South feared more than negro dishonesty, ignorance, and incompetency, and that was negro honesty, knowledge, and efficiency” (“The Negro” Par. 41). After the end of the Civil War, white southerners were faced with one of the worst nightmares coming to true: African Americans were freed from slavery, granted equal protection, and given the right to vote. As Reconstruction progressed, African Americans were confronted with significant change for the fist tim in the history of the United States. After the removal of the Federal Troops following the corrupt bargain of 1877, there was a period of relative calm in the South which was ended by the Supreme Court decision to legalize segregation in the Plessy v.
Close Reading In Chapter One of Our Spiritual Strivings, W.E.B Du Bois constructs a powerful argument about the history and experience of African Americans in America and how it has shaped their identity as people. He uses vivid imagery, historical context, personal anecdotes, and rhetorical questions to make his point that despite all the struggles endured by African-Americans throughout history they have still managed to find ways to stay connected with their spiritual selves through music and artistry. How this paragraph contributes to the writer's larger argument is the difference between white people and their storm and stress and black people “rocks are a little boat on the mad waters of the word sea.” I picked rocks our little boat to refer to black people because we have to take on many difficult obstacles to truly be free, but it is a distant goal.
I agree with Booker T. Washington for the simple fact he has more of an independent aspect for African American people. As to W.E.B. DuBois wants white to feel sorrow for what they have done to African Americans. I do agree that whites should feel bad for what they did but I don’t think it makes anything any better if African Americans fresh out of slavery were just handed things. Just handing things to people would create a lazy society and it would start a bad habit that may turn into another big problem like slavery. W.E.B. DuBois's beliefs weren't bad considering he was the founder of a school for blacks, one of the reason I do not agree with him is because he demanded equal rights for blacks.
Malcolm X had a troublesome childhood growing up. He was an orphan early and he dropped out of school in 8th grade because his teacher told him he couldn’t succeed on being a lawyer based on his race. He was later arrested in 1945 for burglary and was sent to prison. It was then and there where Malcolm X found his passion of reading and writing. There he was also introduced to a man by the name of Bimbi, Malcom X stated that he wanted to ‘emulate’ him.

Due to Malcolm X’s struggles in his early life, he dealt with an internal anger and resentment towards the white race, which lead to him rebelling and acting out. When Malcolm X was only 6 years old, criminals murdered his father and sparked an internal flame of hatred. His anger convinced him to commit various crimes such as stealing. This acted as a way to rebel against his family and the white community; he would not accept going unnoticed, nor would he accept others as they treated him as inferior. Not only did young Malcolm steal, but he also fought frequently with his family members.
Malcolm’s speeches acted more as instruments of provocation than conversion. Unlike Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign, Malcolm’s campaign around the country was a direct assault and it was difficult to see any oppressor that will tolerate such. This obviously accounted for the many police brutalities, imprisonment and deaths among the black race. Malcolm X symbolized black dominance and self-respect, he was one of the greatest forces that shaped the current understanding and interpretation given to conflict and violence in the world politics today. Malcolm X was sentenced to prison for armed robbery, and he made the most of his time in the institution. He felt ashamed that he could not read as well as some of his cellmates, and wished to be able to write intelligently to Elijah Muhammed, the leader of the nation of Islam. He rented out a dictionary from the prison’s library and copied every page word for word. He states that he would read all hours of the day, and even at night. He recounts
Malcolm X was a Muslim minister who was also African American. He was a activist for human rights, Malcolm was a bold and courageous spokesperson for blacks to have rights,Malcolm X declared America “white America” to have the most harshest of terms for it’s tenacious treatments against African Americans. In the year 1946, he was sentenced to prison because he was caught breaking and entering. When he was incarcerated, he was chosen to become a member of the Nation of Islam. This is when he changed his birth name from Malcolm Little to Malcolm X. Later he had written,”Little was the name that the white slave master … had imposed upon paternal forebears” After his parole in 1952 his popularity grew and became the organization 's most influential leaders, and served as the public face of the controversial group for a dozen years.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.
Malcolm X was an American Muslim leader who contributed to the Civil Rights Movement by spreading his ideas of black nationalism in the 1950s and early ’60s. He was an influential figure in a black Islamic organization, Nation of Islam, and served as a spokesperson for the organization. He was assassinated on February 21, 1965 while making a speech in Harlem. After his death, his life story was made well-known through his autobiography, The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965) (Mamiya 1). Malcolm X is a man whose background and activism contributed to the Civil Rights Movement and America as a whole.
