RESPONDS On ‘WE REAL COOL ‘by Gwendolyn Brooks Gwendolyn Brooks were among the earliest Black poets whose works were widely read which earn her an award as her the first African American to receive the Pulitzer. Her works often dealt with the personal struggles of ordinary people in her community. The title of this poem is the same as the first line, In my opinion I like this poem because it relates to modern day kids. The poem is all about a gang of youths and what they're doing. A pool house is an open place to have fun and alcohol are served too. “Seven at the golden shovel” it could mean the name of the pool house or probably seven of prayers at the golden shovels. The first stanza of the poem says “We real cool. we left school” . “We”, to my understanding I think “WE” stands for two or more people so basically those guys are the characters and what she meant by “we real cool” is there in a good vibe or happy go luck . As for "We left school," we can't be sure if it means they are escaping the drudgery and dullness of school . Because they are supposed to be in school at that particular moment to study, or if it’s June , school might already be out . The second stanza says ‘Lurk late, strike straight’, “ lurk late” could also mean keep out of sight or describing how they stay out late and probably get into trouble. “Strike straight” it could mean them shooting ball straight in the pool
