Russia had the reputation of being backward because of its large peasant population and its autocratic monarchy. The Tsar ‘had to’ attend the World War One because they need to have good image that was damaged from Russo-Japanese war which Russia lose unexpectedly, which make Russian people disappointed a lot. The Slavonic countries were connected to Russia culturally and through a shared religion. However, Russia was not very close to Serbia and Russia also disapproved Serbian terrorist activity to Austria-Hungary, which mainly caused World War one. This would be a major blow to Russian power and prestige if Austria attacked Serbia. It would show that Russia had no power to support Serbia and the tsar would be regarded as too weak to protect.
