In Waiting by Ha Jin, Lin Kong’s attempts numerous times to divorce his wife to marry his lover. Through such a predicament, he met Geng Yang at the hospital and receive advice from him. Though Geng Yang’s way of speaking is very crude, he understands and gives advice far better than Lin Kong’s higher-minded associates. He opens up reality to Lin Kong and tells him that both sides can’t go happy. He must choose which will suffer. Lin will have to give up his image of a “good man” to resolve this problem. A problem in which Geng Yang believes is not that hard and that Lin is making it harder than it should be.
Throughout the book, Lin Kong lacks commitment and drive. He fails on multiple occasions to divorce Shuyu and protect Manna. Geng Yang
