Empathy is a quality difficult to attain. Not many people can really look through the eyes of someone else most of us are sympathetic. Empathy is almost a rare feeling how often are you going to feel empathy for the syrian refugees or children in Africa? It’s hard to feel empathy for things that we haven't experienced. But in every bundle of people their is an Atticus Finch.
Some excellent examples of this are discrimination, bravery, and family. Lee introduces discrimination into the story by showing the different social structures of the people in Maycomb. For instance, even though the Robison’s, and other black families, are more courteous than the Ewells, they are put below them on the social scale because of the fact that they aren’t white; the only people that are put below blacks are mixed people because they are unwanted. When it came to the trial, it was the word of a white man against the word of a black. As a result, Tom was still convicted, even though he was telling the truth and the evidence showed it wasn’t him, because Mr. Ewell was a white man.
Racism is a topic still at the forefront of most political discussions to this day. Even though large strides have been made towards ending the racial divide, there is still a large amount of stereotypical behavior that can be seen. In examining the book “Coming of Age in Mississippi,” Moody’s outlook on different races, and Southern beliefs, it becomes clear that racism played and still plays an incredibly negative role on the lives of not only African Americans but all of those who are subject to this prejudice. In the book “Coming of Age in Mississippi” by Anne Moody she illustrates with her writing and offers a very interesting look at the prejudices seen by African Americans in the Southern United States around the time of Jim Crow laws.
To KIll a Mockingbird by Harper Lee uses the town of Maycomb changing throughout the story ultimately affecting the ending. Lee represents society as an ever changing factor to people life. There are a few things that attribute to this change including the case against Tom Robinson as well as the mob that confronts Atticus wanting to get at Tom Robinson. Characters such as Atticus Finch have seen this change in Maycomb and are personally affected by it.

The quote shows how even though the case was lost, the black citizens of Maycomb still showed appreciation and thought that he did his best, rose to the occasion, and did a heroic act towards the civil rights movement. “Harrison Bergeron,” written by Kurt Vonnegut at the time of the Cold War, is a short story that takes place in a future world of the year 2081 where the Handicapper General and the law force the beautiful to wear masks, the intelligent to wear earpieces that disrupt their thoughts, and the athletic to wear heavy physical restraints, so that everyone may be equal in the categories of beauty, intelligence, and athleticism; a world where the people “[are] equal in every which way.” (Vonnegut 1) What the many readers of “Harrison Bergeron” seem to misinterpret is that the entire story is an allegory to the political systems of Socialism/Communism and that Vonnegut utilizes symbols in the story that either expose the glaring flaws of left-wing politics or advance the supposedly far-superior ideology of American capitalism. In actuality, Vonnegut’s use of symbols in “Harrison Bergeron,” and the entire story itself is a satire of the common American’s ignorant misunderstandings of left-wing politics at the time of the Cold War. Vonnegut once said at a college commencement speech, “I suggest that you work for a socialist form of government … It isn 't moonbeams to talk of modest plenty for all.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird shows how Jem, Scout and Boo overcome their loss of innocence and overcome the struggles that Maycomb county and its people throw at them. While Jem, Scout, are just rudimentary kids they face some real world problems and they witness some of the harsh ways people did things but witnessing those things and hearing all the judgemental people is also a detriment to their innocence.
Most authors, when writing futuristic stories, tend to have technological advances like flying cars or robots to add that flare. However, in the story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut there is nothing of the sort. In the year 2081, the US government has tried to reach full equality by using handicaps on the gifted. The society’s rules leave more people with pain and anger rather than a sense of total equality with each other. Which leads some readers to wonder what a society where the ungifted were lifted up instead of the gifted put down would be like in comparison with Vonneguts.
