It had a strange odor, a kind of rotten stench, a smell of death and decay. ’’ Sensory imagery enables Crichton to deliver lifelike descriptions of the dinosaurs, consequently immersing readers inside his story. Furthermore, with the audience able to visualize exactly what struggles the protagonist’s are going through, Crichton can manipulate the emotions of the reader to experience the same emotions of fear, jubilation and terror the protagonists feel throughout the book. This allows the audience to connect with the characters, relate with them and emphasize with them.
Eckles wants to hunt a dinosaur but ignores warnings about stepping off of the path and even threats of getting shot as a consequence. Travis explains how killing one animal can have a large impact,
Poverty, sexism, and racism are all aspects of American life that dictate the lives of people, and each aspect affects the population in their own way. In the novel The Street, Ann Petry captures the setting and identity of Harlem in the 1940’s. The story explores the good and bad obstacles faced by Lutie Johnson, a young woman struggling to find a place to settle with her son. Once they are in the past and see the Tyrannosaurus Ray Bradbury uses imagery to explain what the dinosaur looks like. The Tyrannosaurus was described as, “...thirty feet above half the trees, a great evil of god, folding its delicate watchmaker’s
How well does Moore describe the culture of the streets, where young boys grow up believing that violence transforms them into men? Talk about the street culture—its violence, drug dealing, disdain for education. What creates that ethos and why do so many young men find it attractive? Moore describes the culture of the street in a very detailed manner.
In the nonfiction novel, Always Running, Luis Rodriguez elaborates on his personal life experience in L.A. gangs. Always Running contains atrocious detail and powerful, poetic, passages, that leave each reader impacted and potentially speechless. Rodriguez’s work is not only literary, but takes a stand to political issues that continue to be faced in today’s society. Luis was not given easy paths even as a young boy. This novel goes into explaining the shootings, jail time, suicides, addiction of hard drugs, discrimination, and the constant deaths, in which Luis has to experience almost daily.
Within Edward Scissorhands, when other characters meet Edward, they identify him as a freak of nature, as someone who might hurt them. When Kim was coming back home, she encountered Edward for the very first time. Numerous shot-reverse-shots were used to revealed the terror in her eyes. As she screamed at the very top of her lungs, she had woken up the entire house. Peg had to calm her down to tell her that Edward was someone not to fear, despite his gargantuan scissors for hands.
When forced into a situation, some people crush under the pressure, but others prevail through it. This is proven in the story The Rights to the Streets of Memphis when a boy, the narrator, overcomes his fear. In the beginning of the short story, the narrator’s family is not able to provide food to put on the table. When the mother finally gets a job, she sends the narrator to the store to get food where he is attacked by a gang of boys. After being attacked multiple times, the narrator’s mother sends him back again, but this time he fights back against the boys.
One night, during the cold winter, I walked along the side walk to reach the local store down the block. As I walked out, before I can realize it, I was dropping down onto the concrete while bullets swiftly passed me. I then began to run back home, but I wanted to keep running. Away from Chicago, away from the west side. Growing up in Chicago, it was easy to assume that there was nothing different beyond the blocks of my streets.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
The event that I have chosen is the Freedom Rides, which started May 4, 1961 and ended December 10, 1961. The Freedom Rides were inspired by the Greensboro Sit-ins, and started with 13 African American and Caucasian protestors riding buses into the segregated south to challenge the lack of enforcement to the Supreme Court ruling that segregated buses were unconstitutional. While the activists were peaceful the local law enforcement and people against their message were not. The activists were beaten at several stops along their journey from Anniston to Birmingham with chains, bricks, and bats by Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members in Alabama, and activists that were injured would be refused hospital treatment. Bull Connor, Commissioner of Public Safety
These illustrations of the past almost transport the reader right into the past were Eckels and the time safari are hunting by flaring every sense of the reader. Touch, smell, and sight are all invoked to help get the image across but above all, the description of the Tyrannosaurus rex tops all. Bradbury starts of with the “great oiled, resilient, striding legs” of the gigantic monster. He then moves on to the height of the beast. Bradbury paints the T-rex as being thirty feet above half of the trees.

It was 2:25 pm in Murphysboro, Illinois. The skies darkened, the winds howled, and the rain poured down.
