Walt Disney, Famous One-time Missourian

Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. Walt Disney grew up to be an American entrepreneur, animator, voice actor, and film producer. As a pioneer of the American animation industry, he developed many innovations in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, Walt holds the record for the most Academy Awards ever won by a single individual. He was nominated for 59 Oscars and won 22 of them. He also was the honorary recipient of four more after his death.

with five-hundred dollars borrowed from his uncle, Walt and his brother Roy set out on the ultimate adventure, and moved to Southern California to set up the Disney Bros. Studio. In 1928, he created Mickey Mouse, his most personally cherished and beloved character. Walt himself provided the voice for Mickey during the early years, until 1947. Walt also had a great drive to develop new innovations in animation. These innovations helped revolutionize the cartoon world. Because of these innovations, Walt has long been recognized as a cinematic genius in this field. Another area of innovation attributed to Walt Disney is animatronics. This field was very new at the time. Walt pioneered new ideas that are still being used around the world today for special effects in movie production, in theme parks, and in theaters. It is almost mind-boggling to list all the innovations Mr. Disney’s empire is responsible for. Future generations, long after his death, continue to enjoy his genius, zest for life, spirit of adventure, love of nature, and respect for fellow man. By that time, “Disney” was already a household word and a multi-billion dollar entertainment empire. At the time of his death, Disneyland, located in Anaheim, California was only eleven years old, but was a huge success. In 1971, The Disney Company began designing what is now Walt Disney World in Central Florida. There are now 35 Disney-owned and operated theme parks around the world, including Europe and Asia.
Walt’s easy-going personality, committment to family and professional integrity made both his private and professional lives happy and successful, as the legacy he left us continues.
There is a reason his businesses have continued to flourish, and to this day, have never wavered in their success.
Two of Walt Disney’s most famous quotes are, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” and, “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse.”
